walk and talk counselling in london

At Victoria Simpson Counselling, I offer walk and talk counselling as a gentle, supportive alternative to traditional indoor sessions. We walk side by side in calm, natural surroundings while engaging in meaningful counselling conversations, combining professional support with the benefits of movement and time in nature.

I currently offer walk and talk counselling in Battersea Park, Clapham Common, Dulwich Park, and Crystal Palace Park, and may also be able to arrange offer sessions in other suitable outdoor locations across South London.

What Is Walk and Talk Counselling?

Walk and talk counselling takes place outdoors at a gentle, client-led pace. The work remains confidential, ethical, and grounded in established counselling practice; the only difference is the setting. Sessions are always held in parkland or along river paths, rather than on busy streets creating a calmer environment where conversations can unfold naturally.

Walking side by side, rather than sitting face to face, can ease the intensity some people feel in a counselling room. Many clients find it easier to talk openly without the pressure of maintaining eye contact.

Why I Offer Walk and Talk Counselling

Environment shapes how safe and open we feel. Being outdoors can help clients feel more present and grounded, supporting emotional regulation and reflection. Battersea Park, Clapham Common, Dulwich Park, and Crystal Palace Park all offer spacious, peaceful settings well suited to this kind of work, and I’m happy to discuss whether another local park or river path near you could work instead.

The Benefits of Walk and Talk Counselling

  • A calmer, more relaxed counselling experience: walking side by side often helps conversations feel more natural and less pressured than sitting opposite one another.

  • The mental health benefits of nature: time in green space has been linked to reduced stress, improved mood, and increased emotional balance.

  • Movement that supports emotional processing: gentle movement can help regulate the nervous system and support clearer thinking, particularly in you feel stuck or overwhelmed.

  • A more integrated approach: this way of working recognises the connection between mind, body, and environment.

Who It’s For

This approach may suit you if you are experiencing:

  • Anxiety or ongoing stress

  • Mild to moderate depression

  • Burnout or emotional exhaustion

  • A difficult life transition

  • Low motivation or a general sense of feeling stuck

  • A preference for talking while moving, rather than sitting in a traditional counselling room

It isn’t right for everyone. and this is always discussed carefully. Mobility needs, privacy requirements, or the nature of what you want to explore may mean indoor counselling is a better fit; this is always discussed together beforehand.

Practical Considerations

Confidentiality: routes are chosen thoughtfully in quieter areas of the park, and conversation pauses if others are nearby. Complete privacy cannot be guaranteed outdoors, so boundaries are agreed in advance.

Weather and flexibility: sessions usually go ahead in most conditions. Where needed, we can move indoors or online instead.

Pace and Accessibility: the pace and route are always guided by you and adapted to your comfort and physical needs.
