Why I Work Online Only with Clients Based in the UK

When offering online counselling, it’s important that the support is not only convenient, but also safe, ethical, and appropriately governed. For that reason, I work online exclusively with clients who are located in the UK.

This isn’t about restriction — it’s about responsibility and care.

Ethical and professional standards

I work in line with the BACP Ethical Framework, which sets clear expectations around competence, safeguarding, confidentiality, and duty of care. These standards are shaped by UK law and professional guidance.

Working with clients based in the UK allows me to practise within a clear and consistent ethical and legal framework, which helps protect both you and the counselling relationship.

Safeguarding and support in emergencies

If you were to become distressed or at risk during our work together, it’s important that I can:

  • Understand the relevant UK safeguarding procedures

  • Signpost you to appropriate NHS and local support services

  • Act responsibly within systems I’m trained and insured to work within

This is much more difficult — and sometimes not possible — across different countries, laws, and healthcare systems.

Professional insurance and accountability

My professional insurance covers online work with clients located in the UK. Staying within this ensures that:

  • The work is properly insured

  • There is clear professional accountability

  • You are protected as a client

Clarity and safety for you

Counselling works best when boundaries are clear and well held.

Limiting online work to UK-based clients means I can:

  • Offer consistent, reliable support

  • Be confident in my professional responsibilities

  • Focus fully on the quality of the work, rather than navigating legal uncertainty

A final reassurance

This decision reflects my commitment to ethical, safe, and responsible practice.

If you’re based in the UK and looking for online counselling that is thoughtful, contained, and grounded in clear professional standards, you’re very welcome to get in touch.
